After visiting the Suffolk Historical Society, I walked across the street to the Riverhead Free Library. The paved parking lot has six handicapped (van) accessisble spaces. A stone patio area has seven benches. The automatic doors lead to an entryway with two tables and vending machines. A lovely bird mobile is the centerpiece of the welcome area.

This large library has a variety of sections with private rooms for special activities. The Children’s Room has a play area as well as a handicapped-accessible, single-occupancy restroom. Of special note – there is a Long Island History Section in this library.  Everyone I spoke with seemed genuinely happy to be working there. They are happy to answer any and all questions- and if they don’t know the answer, they will find out for you.

Meeting rooms are on the lower level. Elevators go to all levels. There are two, single-occupancy, handicapped-accessible restrooms down here. There are also multi-stall, handicapped-accessible restrooms near the browsing room.

As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to visit a venue’s website, www.riverheadlibrary.org, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
