Meeting friends for an early dinner brought us to Refuge for a third time. This is a vibrant place that tends to get quite noisy as the evening goes on, so we chose an early time to meet.

Valet parking was available at the entrance.  If you choose not to valet your car, be prepared for quite a walk to the public parking area. There is also one handicapped space near the valet drop-off.

Stone is underfoot at the street level double doors that lead to a large welcome area. If you have to wait, there is some seating here.

This establishment has an inviting Tuscan feel; wood on the walls, tile on the floors, comfortable tables and upholstered chairs in several dining areas. The main area does not require any steps. An area in the rear requires two steps up. The large, lounge area has a full-height bar, stools and high tables. A  large, street-level, outdoor area is easily accessible.

Refuge’s menu says, “…a modern twist on Italian and Latin cuisine, with a nod to the classics and bar food, prepared…in our wood burning oven.” We liked the menu. We found the selections to have an interesting twist on some items. Our server was very pleasant, professional and helpful with our questions and choices.  We each had something different and we all loved what we ordered! Sharing was great!

Refuge’s “…goal is simple…create a restaurant that you can “come as you are in a comfortable, engaging environment to eat something good and sip something sinful.” (website).

My only disappointment has to do with the restrooms. There are  six, small, single-occupancy (non-handicapped-accessible) restrooms. Not seeing a sign signifying a handicapped restroom, I inquired. I was told about (and then shown) the large, single-occupancy, handicapped-accessible restroom. The sign on the door does not indicate that it is handicapped-accessible. It says, “For Staff Use Only.” The hostess told me that the sign had been broken and had not been replaced as yet. It has been more than six months since I was last here and still no sign. This does not seem to be very kind to anyone with a need for this type of restroom.

As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to check a venue’s website,  http://www.refuge110.com,  when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
