One of my favorite things to do on a beautiful summer on Long Island is to have a leisurely lunch overlooking the water. It so happened that my birthday fell on just such a day this year. We took advantage of the weather and went to Prime in Huntington for a relaxed lunch in a serene setting, overlooking Huntington Harbor.
Designed to reflect the look of a classic boathouse along the Charles River, Prime’s multi-level visual expanse is the beginning of a wonderful experience.
There is seating both indoors and out, tables right down to the dock level, an upper level that is off the indoor dining area, a large, lounge area with fireplace, and an outdoor, fire pit area as well. If you are calling for a reservation, make sure to discuss your needs with the person on the phone.
If you have a mobility limitation, it can be a bit tricky to find where you want to be. If you want to dine inside, or outdoors but still on the main level, there is an accessible ramp to the right side of the building as you drive into the paved, parking lot. There are several accessible spaces close to the ramp. The ramp will get you to the lounge area, and from here you can go to the front desk.
If you want to be outside and close to the water, go to the street-level entrance to the left of the building, which will take you to that lower level. There are several accessible parking spaces near here as well. Make sure that someone in your party checks in with the front desk. If you choose to sit here, know that there are multi-stall restrooms with an accessible stall, so there is no need to work your way to the main level and its restrooms.
If you are siting on the main level, in the dining, or lounge area, large, accessible, single-occupancy restrooms are located easily in the rear. Note that there are no baby-changing facilities.
We had a perfect table right next to the dock, easy to watch the boats docking and leaving, as well as boats cruising through the Harbor.
Our server was quite lovely and attentive, making sure that everything was to our liking. The lunch special was excellent, a great caesar salad, (very) spicy tuna roll, and hamburgers and fries that were definitely large enough for two! Everything was delicious. Paired with a glass of wine, we couldn’t have asked for anything more. We were able to relax and enjoy both the food and the view. It was a very Happy Birthday!
As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to visit a venue’s website, wwwrestaurantprime.com, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
