“The Islip Art Museum is the leading exhibition space for contemporary art on Long Island. The New York Times has called the Museum the ‘best facility of its kind outside Manhattan,” (website).
Once again, a friend and colleague was exhibiting at the Museum and invited my husband and me to the opening reception. This is one of “five exhibitions a year that are “organized to reflect issues and concerns in the current art world,” (website). The current exhibition, “Private Viewing: For Your Eyes Only,” features works that are in an enclosure of some form that engages only one viewer at a time. (brochure) The works are quite interesting and all so different from one another. It was quite an event! Lots and lots of people, music, food and drink made for a lively evening.
The museum is located in Brookwood Hall, on Irish Lane, in East Islip. I would describe this venue as somewhat off the beaten path, although rather easy to find. It is about ½ mile from the center of town.
A paved parking lot, directly in front of the handicapped entrance has 5 handicapped spaces. A ramp with a handicapped assist push button gets one into the building. It is most unfortunate that, as of this writing, the handicapped entrance is still not open on weekends. Apparently it is only open when the town offices are open.
The hallways inside are wide, with several galleries. The floors are flat and smooth with varying surfaces in the different rooms. There is no seating in the galleries. The small gift shop has some unusual items.
A single-occupancy bathroom, with handicapped assist push buttons to enter and exit is a real treat. There is another unisex restroom as well.
The museum is located in a lovely park that has two play areas, some benches and picnic tables next to Knapps Lake.
This small museum is a gem! As always, we at Destination: Accessible urge you to check [http://www.islipartmuseum.org|www.islipartmuseum.org] to “know before you go.”
