Since autumn has arrived and the weather has been beautiful on Long Island I went searching online to find someplace for pumpkin or apple picking.

I was amazed to find a place that was listed as “handicapped accessible,” Fink’s Country Farm.  I was intrigued. I had to visit.  I enlisted my “better half” to take a ride with me to see this place. Although not “around the corner” for us, it turned out to be a wonderful find!

We pulled into a small gravel parking area. Although there are no designated handicapped spaces, parking is plentiful along the side of the road.  Since we were here early on a Thursday morning we had the place to ourselves. I’m sure this is not the case on the weekend!

The farm stand out front, the signage, and décor are very inviting. Everything seems to say, “Welcome!”

I approached one of the people at the farm stand to ask about the handicapped accessibility. The lovely woman who answered me turned out to be Michelle Fink, one of the owners.  She seemed happy to give us a tour of the farm.

We visited the corn maze, which is definitely wide enough for a wheelchair. Of course the ground is dirt and grass, as one would expect, but it is definitely doable. We saw the hayride wagon, which has a ramp that allows wheelchair users to get up and in. How great! Michelle told us of one older gentleman, who, after his ride, thanked her with tears in his eyes because he had never been able to do this before.  Wow!  We visited the farmyard, which houses the animals in adorable, hand made “living environments. “ (website) We saw the “cow train” for the younger set, pumpkin patch, play area and large picnic area.  We were told about the barnyard bounce, pig races, face painting and more that occur on weekends during the fall.

The farm is open from April – October, with most activities, including snacks and a candy shop, happening on the weekends.

We were happy to see a number of restrooms, including a free-standing, single-occupancy, handicapped-accessible one.

There are some benches throughout, although a few closer to the maze entrance would be helpful to many folks.

Since this is a working farm one must navigate dirt underfoot, but it is flat and well worth the effort.

Besides the farm stand, Fink’s offers a large variety of seasonal decorations which were hard to resist. Some beautiful mums came home with us!

This seems to be a destination that is worth the drive. Michelle and her husband seem dedicated to making sure that everyone has a good time.  If you have any questions call (631) 886 – 2272. I’m sure someone will be more than happy to help you.

As always, we at Destination Accessible advise you to check a venue’s website, http://www.finksfarm.com, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
