Bowling balls and shoes have come a long way since I last bowled. Balls with spectacular colors and designs, and really nice looking shores were what I saw as I looked around the Pro Shop at Farmingdale Lanes. I had been invited to visit to see how accessible this venue is, and since I am never one to pass up a shop I had to take a peek.

Farmingdale Lanes  is one of five locations of family owned, Maple Family Centers, which have been in business for nearly 60 years. Quite a record!  The website states that they are  “…dedicated to providing a safe and fun place for children of all ages to come and enjoy bowling.”  After my visit here, I can happily say that seem to be doing very well in providing a “…contemporary, clean, friendly, and fun bowling center that treats staff and customers as extended family…” ( March,2017 interview with John La Spina) I can say that, based on my visit to Farmingdale Lanes, all of that certainly seems to be true.  Everyone I came in contact with was friendly and helpful and all of the people bowling that day seemed to be having a fun time.

This venue is truly handicapped-accessible for all.  Everything is on one level, with no steps to think about anywhere. Flooring throughout is a combination of flat carpet and/or tile.  Low tables with non-moveable chairs are at the back of each lane. Chairs with wheels can be found throughout the lanes and moved wherever needed. There are also high tables and stools at the back of each alley. Wheelchair users can enjoy a game with special ramps. Bumpers can be placed in any lane if needed for anyone’s needs.

What’s bowling without snacks?  Farmingdale Lanes has both a retro-décor snack bar (full-height counter as well as tables and chairs), and an intimate bar/lounge (full-height bar and intimate lounge area with well-spaced tables and chairs). Parties of any type can be accommodated in the large party room.

Youth Programs and Cosmic Bowling are among many of the special activities offered. I am looking forward to Cosmic Bowling one of these nights!

Multi-stall restrooms with a small handicapped stall are located near the snack bar.  It is wonderful that there is also a single-occupancy, handicapped-accessible, restroom in the lobby.

Before I forget, two handicapped (van) – accessible parking spaces are located in the rear parking lot and five in the front lot. Both front and rear entrances are street level, with double doors, an entryway and another set of double doors.

Farmingdale Lanes is an easily accessible, fun place for everyone.  If you have any specific needs or questions, just call and ask.

As always, we at Destination Accessible advise you to check  a venue’s website, http://www.farmingdalelanes.com,  when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
