We hadn’t been to The Lake House since before Covid closed things down. We thought that our anniversary would be the perfect time to return. This is one of our favorite places for summer dining on the water. Great view, great food and attentive service, plus easy accessibility, make it a great choice for us.
With the Fire Island Ferry Terminal next door, valet parking alleviates the task of looking for a spot during the very busy summer months. One just needs to figure out how to go around the lot to get to the valet line. Facing the Great South Bay might make one wonder about the name of this establishment. Apparently, it used to be near a lake, hence the name. When they moved they simply kept the name!
Four steps, or concrete ramp lead to the double-door entrance. Go through the vestibule and on to the welcome area. As usual, when we made our reservation we asked for outside seating (which is not guaranteed). Having an early dinner reservation made getting a table close to the water easy. This area is easily accessible through double doors. If you want to be really close to the water, there are some tables down three steps to the lounge area. One can access this lower area by walking back through the restaurant to the main entrance and ramp. Go down the ramp and walk around to the lounge area. The inside dining area has a somewhat formal air about it, with tablecloths and lovely place settings. There is one dining area I would call “semi-private.” There are several fireplaces that are wonderful to sit near in the winter (we have). There is also a beautiful bar/lounge area (full-height bar) with both high and low tables. All areas are quite spacious, with tables well-spaced for easy navigation and conversation. The deck has a more casual atmosphere.
As we enjoyed our view of the ferries and other boats coming and going, we finally had to turn our attention to the menu. It is always difficult to make a choice when there are so many good options. We were a party of four, who chose three different fish entrees, plus appetizers. Each of them was delicious! We are never disappointed in our selections here. Our server couldn’t have been nicer or more attentive. She was especially attentive to the person in our party with a shell fish allergy, making sure that everything she chose would be ok for her to eat. The chef even changed ingredients in one of the sauces to accommodate her.
This was a perfect way to celebrate our anniversary!
Multi-stall restrooms with a large, accessible stall (but no baby-changing facilities) are located in the rear of the main dining room.
