A gorgeous, late September afternoon brought us to Port Jefferson. We had not been here for a while, so we decided to walk around and have a late lunch. Since I am always for outdoor, waterfront dining, this day could not have been better. A cloudless blue sky and warm breeze made dining on the Summer Deck a “no brainer.” We were fortunate to get a table on the water. Actually it was on a dock-like structure, wide enough for a carriage or wheelchair, but narrow enough so that the tables are actually in a row. An amazing location, close enough to the Port Jeff Ferry Dock for us to watch the Ferry load and unload. This is one side of the outdoor seating available. The other side is much larger, along the wooden dock, with tables as well as a high counter and bar chairs. This section is accessible as well.
Our server was lovely and quite helpful. Our water glasses were readily refilled without being asked, a really nice touch! Lunch was delicious and so… relaxing that we really didn’t want to leave. It was a perfect ending to our afternoon.
If you do not want to dine outdoors, there is a beautiful indoor dining room with a lovely water view. Unfortunately, getting to this area requires going down two carpeted steps. The hostess told me that anyone requiring assistance will be helped. Wheelchairs can be accommodated by going through the service area.
Entering the hotel is either by seven steps or wooden ramp. Multi-stall restrooms with handicapped-accessible stalls are located to the right of the entrance.
Almost forgot about parking! We had parked in one of the town lots and walked over. There is metered parking behind the hotel, as well as valet I noticed two handicapped spaces close by. It is also easy to drop a passenger off as benches abound.
As always, we at Destination Accessible advise you to check a venue’s website www.danfords.com, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
