The Paramount began as a grand movie parlor in 1927.Known as the Huntington Theater it was a hub for vaudeville and silent films, transitioning to “talkies.”
It has undergone several transformations over the years. In 2011, following extensive renovations, reopened as “The Paramount,” a state-of-the-art concert hall, with a seating capacity of 1,550. According to Billy Joel, the Paramount is “the best club that’s ever been on Long Island.”
I had not been to The Paramount since its reopening – quite some time! Not really knowing what to expect, I was surprised at how great a venue it is, with special consideration for those with special needs.
The Paramount is a two-level concert hall with nightclub vibes, that seemed a bit “retro” to me. The street level doors are accessible to all. From the lobby one has to take stairs, or the elevator at the back or the lobby to the main level. Take note that there is no elevator service to the mezzanine or skybox seating levels. There are handrails in the aisles up here, but no aisle lighting. Balcony seating is traditional theater seating. Seating in the side, loge area is “moveable.”
No matter where your ticket is located, people with disabilities can be relocated to the floor area, which is sectioned off for wheelchair access. They will seat those needing accessible seating once the box office opens on the day of the event. This is done on a first-come, first-served basis. This is available until the accessible area reaches capacity, which is usually early. You can contact the venue at “wwwhitusup@paramountny.com” or call (631) 673-7300 for information about accommodations.
The main level brought us to a very large bar in the center. Our seats were on this level, so we did not need to climb any more steps. Some shows are all seated, some are hybrid. The main floor seats are folding chairs, that are quite close together.
There are concession stands on all sides of the venue and all are accessible.
Multi-stall restrooms are located on the main level. A single-occupancy, family restroom is accessible and has a baby-changing station.
“Kudos” to the Paramount for their extensive “Accessibility” section on the website. If all venues did this, Destination Accessible would not need to exist! And that would be great!
There is also an online “Huntington Village Parking Map,” to assist patrons. Considering how difficult parking can be in town, it is a wonderful thing to include.
The Paramount is a wonderful venue for all.
We loved the venue and we loved the performance we saw – “That 60’s Show!” Can’t wait until next time!
As always we at Destination Accessible, advise you to visit a venue’s website, www.paramountny.com, when planning a visit, to learn more.
