I noticed the sign as we passed by and remembered an article in Newsday a bit earlier describing this new park. Needless to say, a quick turn-around was in order.
We found two handicapped spaces as we pulled into the small parking lot. The lot is as close as it can be to the children’s play area. This “cushy” area has a variety of equipment, including low equipment and an accessible swing. The kids and parents we saw were having a great time! If you need a rest, there are three benches along the perimeter so you can still keep a close eye on the kids. Next to the play area is an area with six concrete tables and benches, some with checkerboard tops. Three picnic tables are always under cover, a great idea on a hot day!
Besides the playground, this 8 acre park has 5 acres of passive parkland, a ½ mile walking trail, tennis courts, bocce courts, pickle ball courts and adult exercise equipment. The gravel walking trail is wide and easy to navigate.
Unfortunately, there are no restrooms at this park. What a shame!
As always, we at Destination Accessible advise you to check a venue’s website, www.ohuntingtonny.gov, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
