The Suffolk Theater, Riverhead is a beautiful Art Deco building, known as The Radio City Music Hall of Long Island. Built in 1933, “… it has been lovingly refurbished and restored. It has been re-imagined for a whole new generation…” (website). We were lucky enough recently, to go to performances on two consecutive evenings
Designated accessible street parking is available if you arrive early. There is also a large municipal lot behind the building. We were lucky to get a spot on the street
Three sets of street-level, double doors welcome you into a beautiful, Art-Deco, entry-way. From here you go to the lobby, which then gets you to the seating itself. There is a large bar here, as well as a single-occupancy, accessible restroom, to the right. If you need accessible seating, it is back here, near the bar. All other seating requires going down steps. There are sets of two steps to each seating level. If steps are a problem from you or someone in your party, it is best to request seats back here. The steps are not steep, but there are no handrails (just the wooden partitions for each level, that you can lean on). There is also balcony seating, up more than 20 steps. The balcony level is also where the multi-stall, non-accessible, restrooms are.
It is worth nothing that seating plans vary, based on the performance. Most times, seating is “supper-club like” with tables and chairs, usually for four people. At other times, the seats are arranged theater like.
It is worth noting that the theater opens 60 minutes before showtime. Table service offers food (mostly small plates, desserts and snacks, and drinks).
If you need any accommodations or have any questions, it would be best to call the box office (631) 727-4343.
The Suffolk is a beautiful theater that can be easily accessible if you know what to ask for.
As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to visit a venue’s website, www.thesuffolk.org, when planning a visit, to “know more before you go,”
