We had not been to Mass MoCa (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art) since before Covid. An ad for an exhibition that seemed interesting (Jeffrey Gibson – “Power Full Because We’re Different”) caused us to make a stop there on our way home from Vermont.
Mass MoCa is a contemporary art museum located in a converted Arnold Print Works factory building complex in North Adams, Mass. It is one of the largest centers for contemporary visual art and performing arts in the US. It’s 16 buildings cover 24 acres. The buildings are all interconnected on the second floor, but know that it is very large. We definitely needed the printed map to find our way around. Even with the map we wound up retracing some of our steps to get to another area. There are elevators to all areas, as well as stairs.
Vast galleries and a stunning collection of indoor and outdoor performing arts venues enable Mass MoCa to embrace all forms of art – music, sculpture, dance, film, painting, photo, theater and new boundary-crossing works of art that defy easy classification . Being the middle of January, outdoor areas are not open. We have been here during the summer and the outdoors are wonderful as well. There are many outdoor activities during the summer months.
Since this is a collection of buildings, parking is not necessarily close. Visitors can be dropped off at the front entrance. The parking lot is a five to ten minute walk. Accessible parking spaces may be available somewhat closer, but one cannot count on that.
Once you enter the street- level entrance (with push button assist) one is in the vast lobby space. The admissions desk is located here as well as wheelchairs and gallery stools, which can be borrowed. You might want a gallery stool, Most galleries have a bench or two, but seating is not plentiful. If you have a question about accessibility, you can call (413) 662 – 2111 extension. 8121. This level also has the Lickity Split Cafe – a lovely space with great food at reasonable prices.
The exhibition I was interested in did not disappoint! Rather than describe it, if you are interested you can read about it on the Museum’s website. For me, no visit to Mass MoCa is complete without a visit to the Sol Lewitt exhibition. This is a particular love of mine. Because it is a long-standing exhibition, I can count on it being here.
At the moment there are 35 exhibitions, and a good number of other events.
We would be remiss in not mentioning the wonderful Kid Space, an amazing interactive area.
Mass MoCa has something for everyone – if they like contemporary art!
It îș always innovative and interesting!
Multi-stall restrooms (with accessible stalls) are located on the Basement Level. Single-stall, gender neutral, accessible restrooms are located in Building 6 on floors 1,2,3 and Building 10 on floors 2 and 3.
As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to visit a venue’s website, www.massmoca.org, when planning a visit to learn more about the venue.
