Yesterday, I was reminded of just how wonderful libraries are. Besides being accessible venues for books, magazines, computers, and classes of all kinds, libraries are performance spaces as well. Most libraries offer amazing, free performances, from concerts and plays, to musical productions and lectures, to name just some of the things they provide.
To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month the Levittown Library had an incredible Flamenco performance. “Fuerza Flamenca,” a quartet of talented, artists, presented a brief history of Flamenco, including information about the dancing, singing and guitar playing. They performed a range of styles of Flamenco, including pieces using castanets, fans, shawls, guitars, soulful singing and percussion.
The Levittown Library is accessible, as are most public libraries on Long Island. Ramps allow one to access the automatic doors. Ramps and elevators are there for those than cannot manage the steps. Large, accessible restrooms can be found on all levels. Seating in the theater is easy as well, with plenty of room for those with mobility challenges.
Yesterday’s performance was just one of the interesting things this library offers. Visit your home library’s website to see what’s happening there. You can also look at other libraries for ideas. Although Levittown is not my home library, the performance was open to all. That is the case in many locations. Sometimes, ticket are available to home patrons first, and then open to the general public. If you take the time to look you can probably find a wonderful performance, that is easily acccessible, somewhere, almost every week.
As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to visit a venue’s website, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
Enjoy!
