I must confess that I had not been to the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in many years. What a shame for me and for anyone whom has never been there. It is an important place for everyone to visit, not just those of the Jewish Faith. The Center is “dedicated to educating students and the community about the atrocities of the Holocaust and the importance of tolerance and respect for all people.” (Website)
The Center is in a beautiful setting, within Welwyn Preserve, Glen Cove. There are three accessible spaces in the paved lot. The main entrance has stone and brick up to the large, street-level, single door. To the left of the main entrance, you will find the entrance to the Children’s Memorial Garden. Although there are steps, you can walk a little further to the left and find an accessible path. It is a peaceful place for contemplation, conversation and perhaps a snack or lunch (if you brought one with you).
We were extremely lucky to have been invited to a docent-led tour of the Museum. These must be done by reservation. If you prefer, no reservations are needed for a self-guided digital tour, which one can find on Bloomberg Connects. Reservations are needed for tours of the Children’s Garden.
Our docent Helene was fabulous. I cannot thank her enough for giving of her time, and immense knowledge, to lead us through the Museum. Her personal insights gave us information we could never have known.
“The Museum presents a detailed and comprehensive chronicle of the Holocaust in six galleries, using multimedia displays, photographs, artifacts, archival footage and testimonies from local Survivors and Liberators.” It also “looks at genocides and acts of intolerance since 1945, asking visitors to think about the actions an individual can take to promote resistance to prejudice and prevent the spread of hate.”
“Unlike any other museum the 3,300 sq. ft. museum links this history to Nassau County and the communities we live in.” (Website)
The Center is very accessible with smooth wood floors, and benches in each gallery. Multi-stall restrooms have a large, accessible stall and accessible sink, as well as a baby-changing station. There is even a “kiddy seat” in the accessible stall so that mothers don’t have to worry about their toddlers.
