The Heckscher Museum of Art, is a gem within a gem. The Hecksher is small, but lovely, and is located in Heckscher Park, a gem in the town of Huntington.
Two accessible spaces are located in the small, paved parking lot next to the Museum. If parking is not available there, you can almost always find a spot on Prime Avenue or one of the adjacent side streets. The building is easy to access. If the eight steps are too much, there is a ramp to the double doors.
The Beaux-Arts building is beautiful, both inside and out. Although small (there are really just two galleries on one floor), it is quite spacious. Besides whatever exhibits are on display, they have made sure that there are interactive activities for kids.
Navigation is easy on the smooth, marble floors. A welcome addition would be more benches for those who need them.
The last time we were here there was no accessible restroom. We are extremely happy to report that the Museum now has a large, single-occupancy, accessible restroom ( with baby-changing station ), conveniently located on this main floor. It was a long time in coming, but now that it is here, it is a truly welcome addition.
Many interesting exhibitions are in the works. We hope that they will bring back some of the interesting Senior programs they had in the past. Check the website for information regarding what’s coming (www.heckscher.org).
Plan to spend some time here when you are at the park, or in town. You won’t be disappointed!
As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to check a venue’s website, www.heckscher.org, when planning a visit to “know before you go.”
