Gardiner County Park is a 231 acre park, just off of Montauk Highway. It is about a 1/2 mile walk from the parking lot ( 8 accessible spaces) to an area with lovely views of the Great South Bay, Captree and Fire Island. I suspect that people do come here to take in the views, but it is not really a beach. The signs clearly state that there is no swimming allowed. If you intend to stay here awhile, you need to bring your own chairs or blankets, as there are no benches in this area.
The compacted dirt walkway is wide and fairly flat. We saw people pushing baby carriages, as well as several people with canes and walkers. One woman I spoke with, who was pushing a stroller, said it was an easy walk.
There are a good number of benches close to the playground (not accessible), dog park and restroom building. As you walk towards the water, the benches get farther apart. Just something to note if you intend to walk to the water. There is a covered picnic area with tables and benches, one of which is accessible to a wheelchair user.
The dog park is really nice. Two areas for dogs under and over 25 pounds, as well as an “agility area.” There are benches in both areas. It was nice to watch the dogs obviously having a good time!
When we arrived, around 2:30 pm the two, single-occupancy, accessible, restrooms were open. When we got back, a bit after 4:00 pm, they were locked up – no signs indicating when they are open, or any other information!
The next time our “granddad” comes to visit, we will definitely bring her here to play!
