Across the street, north of the Bellmore LIRR station and next to the firehouse, is a small, wonderful venue I just discovered. I might never have noticed it had I not been looking specifically for it (I think they need a bigger sign!) The Bellmore Movies & The Showplace is a delightful and easily accessible throwback to an earlier time. Built in 1915 this “…little, single scene cinema has survived two pandemics,” (website) and is going strong. They offer mainstream film, independent films, and live shows. It is the last single screen theater in Nassau County as an ongoing business.
As I said, it is across Pettit from the LIRR station. Parking can be found on the street, or after 1:00 you can park at the railroad station. There are two sets of street-level, double doors. Walk through those doors and you are in a lovely lobby with a retro feel. The ticket booth and concession counter is to your left, restrooms on the right. Tile is on the floor in the lobby and flat carpets on the floor in the theater itself. This venue is easily doable for anyone with a mobility limitation. One doesn’t have far to walk from the lobby to his/her seat in the beautiful theater. The aisles are wide with a gentle incline to the seats. Wheelchair and companion seating can be had about halfway down, and also in the very front (if you want an “up close and personal” view), Velvet seats with cup holders are quite comfortable. The theater holds about 340 so that there is really no bad seat in the house if you are there for a live performance.
Multi-stall restrooms in the lobby have a large, accessible stall as well as accessible sinks.
I understand that they also rent the venue for a variety of things. You might want to check it out!
Coming here felt like I was revisiting my youth. I can’t wait to see a performance here!
