From its beginnings in Brazil, in1979, Fogo de Chao has created a delicious presence around the world. Beginning in 1997, they have opened 29 restaurants in the US, and are going strong with their latest one in Melville.

Located at the south end of the Walt Whitman Shops (the restaurant cannot be entered from inside the mall), accessible parking is plentiful, with an entire row of accessible spaces directly across the from the entrance. Although the main entrance is a revolving door, take note of the street-level, single door to the left for anyone unable to manage the revolving one.

Fogo de Chau is a Churrasco, a Brazillian Barbeque method, where meats are placed on big skewers and grilled, then carved directly from the skewers at one’s table. It was developed by the gauchos in the early 17th century. It will still be going strong in 2022 and beyond if our experience is any indication.

Once inside, we were warmly welcomed by staff. The venue itself is beautiful! I loved the soaring windows, modern chandeliers and natural wood paneling. The rich colors used seem to invoke the Brazilian heritage.

Most tables and chairs have ample space around them. Some areas seem to have a bit more space than others.  We recommend explaining your needs when making a reservation. Based on how lovely everyone was when we were there, we are sure they will do their best to accommodate you. There is a long, full-height bar areaa. Sit at the counter in front of the open Churrasco grill, and you can eat while watching the gaucho chefs practicing the culinary art of Churrasco. There are some tables outside on the sidewalk.

The white Carrara Market Table takes center stage. The variety of items available makes choosing difficult, even though you don’t have to. You can take whatever you desire. Just don’t overdo it, or you won’t have room for the star of the show, the meats that are served table side.  Everything I tasted at the Market Table was so good I could easily have skipped the entree portion of the meal. But that’s me! My better half certainly enjoyed the variety of items that arrived. I cannot tell you how many different types of steak there were, besides the lamb, pork and chicken. Each of them was delicious! Almost everything is gluten free (including the scrumptious rolls that were served at the table) and veggie options accommodate everyone. I was pleasantly surprised to see calories listed on the menu!

Our servers were delightful, helpful and professional, as was everyone we interacted with. When I walked over to have a closer look at the grill, one of the staff came over and told me all about it. What a nice thing to do!

Multi-stall restrooms are located in a wide hallway. The accessible stall is exceedingly roomy. Accessible sinks have low mirrors, making it easy for anyone to see. The baby-changing station is always a welcome sight.

Everything about our experience was first-class. We could not have enjoyed our dinner more. We have already made plans to return.

As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to visit a venue’s website www.fogodechao.com, when planning a visit, to “know before you go,”
