Being intrigued by the name on the building each time I passed this venue, I knew I wanted to try it. The opportunity arose when we made dinner plans with friends. Mamajuana Cafe, Huntington is one of five locations in New York and New Jersey. The intention was “to bring architecture from the colonial city of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, combining the spices of the Old World with modern Asian infused culinary delights.” (website) I wondered where the name came from. I found that the term “mamajuana” is a spiced alcoholic beverage originating in the Dominican Republic. Their “innovative Latino cuisine combines traditional recipes with delicious new twists.” (website)
We pulled into the paved, parking lot not really knowing what to expect. We found two accessible spaces near the beautiful, street-level, double door entrance. The large, indoor dining space is lovely. Tile floors and tables that are well-spaced make for easy navigation. There is one dining section at the rear that requires a step up. There is also a full-height bar area with several high-top tables. When I made a reservation for outdoor seating. I was negligent in not asking if the outdoor deck was accessible! It turned out that the only way to get to the deck required going up two steps. Everyone in our party was able to manage the steps, but it was something I should have checked on.
The deck is large, tables a good distance from one another. The only downside to the deck (besides the steps ) is that it is right next to Jericho Turnpike. Be aware that, although the many plants almost hide the road, the noise is there .
Our server was lovely, making sure that she understood the needs of one of the highly allergic members of our group. We tried a variety of items, including guacamole, calamari, tacos, fish, chicken and paella. Everything arrived just as it was ordered and was delicious! We have to give a special shout-out for the paella, which was not only delicious, but easily large enough for two to share.
This seems to be a fun place where people come to celebrate. While we were there, an anniversary and two birthdays were being celebrated just on the deck. We don’t know how many there may have been going on inside. We knew about them because for each celebration, the staff came to the table with a large marquee like, congratulatory sign and sang to the table. Such fun!
Large, accessible, single occupancy restrooms with accessible sinks are located in the rear of the dining room. There are no baby-changing facilities.
