In an effort to try and get out every day that isn’t too cold this winter, we made our way to Eisenhower Park, in East Meadow. We have been to this “930 acre oasis in the heart of Nassau County”(website) many times, but I had never been here in winter. Eisenhower Park is…”one of the largest public spaces in the New York Metro area, even larger than Central Park.” (website) It offers a full range of athletics and family activities, from playgrounds and walking paths, to mini golf and ice skating. Being a Nassau County Park, there are fees associated. During the “non-season,” entry is open to everyone.
We cannot comment on specific handicapped-accessible parking, because there are spots available in all of the paved lots. This park is easily accessible. Paved walkways will easily get you anywhere in the park. All of the paths we have been on are well-maintained, and generally flat.
One of my favorite places in the park is the lake. I have walked the path around it many times while my “better half” was running. One lap around is a little less than 1/2 mile. It is lovely to walk this serene area, see the ducks and geese and an occasional person with a model boat (There is a model boat club there on Saturday mornings – says a posted sign.) There is an abundance of benches if you need a rest, or just want to sit and relax. I have sometimes taken a book to read. Today, we took a brisk walk in the clear, cold air. We took a few minutes to pay our respects at the 9/11 Memorial. This is a very easy place to get to and enjoy. After our four laps around the lake, we visited the Veterans’ Memorial close by and then on to get an update on the playgrounds (see separate listings.) FYI – the abundance of geese make it necessary to watch where you are walking!
Being winter, not all of the restrooms are open. We found an open, large, single-occupancy, handicapped-accessible near the Veterans’ Memorial, close to the Korean War monument. We also found the same type of restroom near the LATCP (Let All The Children Play) Playground. A multi-stall restrooms, with a large, handicapped-accessible stall is in the large building near the mini-golf and batting cages. We don’t know what else is or isn’t open.
Eisenhower Park is an easily accessible, wonderful venue, any time of the year!
As always, we at Destination:Accessible advise you to visit a venue’s website, www.nassaucountyny.gov, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
