We had heard about Whiskey Down Diner from several people. Such an interesting name, I had to find out what it meant. Checking, I found out that in diners it can be hard to hear. White bread and rye can be mistaken for one another. So rye became whiskey, and down became toast, since you have to push the knob on the toaster down. Therefore, toasted rye bread became “whiskey down!”
We had not been here in awhile and are happy to report that it is just as good as we remembered. Delicious food, with pleasant service in a cute setting.
This was our first time dining inside. Our previous visits had always had us in the “courtyard.”
Outdoor seating is in the “alley/courtyard” between the restaurant and building next to it. It is a nice, semi-secluded area where you don’t feel as though you are sitting in the street Metal tables with umbrellas, as well as some picnic tables and benches are well-spaced. The combination of smooth concrete and stone make it easy to a navigate. If you are seated here and need to use the restroom there is a street-level door leading to the rear of the restaurant and very close to the restrooms. It was nice to see the notice on the door telling one to be careful and step down as you enter. There is a small ramp inside the door. If you are not comfortable with that it is easy to go around to the main entrance.
There are two, large, single-occupancy, accessible restrooms with wheelchair accessible sinks, and a baby-changing station. Unfortunately, there are high-chairs piled up in the hallway where the restrooms are, making it difficult to get to the mens’ room. Also, take note that the doors are quite heavy. If you think you might need help, ask someone to assist you.
If you choose to sit inside, as we did today, the street- level, single-door leads to a small entryway and another single door to the welcome area.If you have to wait, there is a bench in this area. Seating is comprised of booths, a full-height bar, and several tables near the entrance. Although not spacious, there is adequate room to navigate.
Almost forgot to mention parking. There is no dedicated parking.Parking is either on the street, or in the large parking lot behind the stores. It is easy to walk from the lot, between the buildings, to the entrance.
Our server was lovely, efficient and attentive. The menu choices are varied and interesting. My breakfast quesadilla was delicious, as was my friend’s BLT. The side salad that came with the sandwich was large enough to be a meal in itself. The coffee was great! We sat for quite a while,. We were never rushed – even offered several refills on the coffee. With an interesting name, delicious food and good service, Whiskey Down Dinner is a winner!
