Robert Moses Beach Boardwalk – Field 5

Roberta Moses Boardwalk is located at Field 5 of Robert Moses State Park ( 600 Robert Moses State Park Drive, Babylon) The large, paved parking lot has many (van)-accessible spaces.

The walk is accessible from the parking lot by wooden ramps at either end of the boardwalk, or from the concrete mall area in the middle. Mobi-mats are located from the concrete. They go less than 1/10 of a mile towards the water.

Multi-stall and family restrooms are accessible. There is food service available.

Early on a beautiful summer day we once again tried ( we had tried a month earlier) to take a walk from Robert Moses Field 5 to the Fire Island Lighthouse. We found the gate to the 3/4 mile path still closed (due to Covid). Not wanting to do the walk on the sand, we opted to spend some time walking “the boardwalk” and taking in the ocean views. Parking in the large, paved lots had some spaces blocked with orange cones (for Covid distancing)  although there were many cars that ignored the guidelines. 

 The “boardwalk” is a walk from one end of the parking field to the other – a total of about 1/2 mile. If you start at the concession, restroom building, you can walk 1/4 mile to the end and back in either direction. If you walk west, you will find one bench to the end. If you walk east,  you will find five benches. We have no idea why this inequity exists, it just is! The walk may not be long, but it is quite nice. The ocean breeze allowed us to do enough round trips for a two mile walk. There is a playground and spray park close by.

It is some distance from the concrete central area to the water. Mobi-mats go less than a tenth of a mile on the sand. If you need a beach wheelchair, they are available free-of-charge, on a first-come-first-served basis, from the Life Guard Office in the building. They may be borrowed to transport someone down to the beach and quickly returned. We were told that there are mobi-mats at Fields 2 and 3. We cannot tell you if this is correct as we did not venture there.  No one seemed to be sure about the beach wheelchairs at those locations.

The concession building is open, although we were there before the restaurant opened for the day. As I looked inside, it appeared to be a large space, that has been set up to accommodate social-distancing, etc. Both the large, multi-stall, and single-occupancy restrooms are open and accessible. No one seemed to be monitoring either of them. The multi-stall restrooms did not have paper towels, only air dryers.

For the most part, people seemed to be maintaining distance as they walked. We cannot speak to the ten foot distance that is supposed to be maintained between beach blankets. We did not get close enough to measure.

This is a lovely, ocean beach. If you can, try it during the week when it is much less crowded. Last time, we visited on a Thursday. By the time we left today(before 11:00 am,) the parking field had already been closed.
