Even though we have lived in Nassau County for more than forty years, we had never visited Wantagh Park. Our loss- such a beautiful place! As we drove along the road from Sunrise Highway to the actual park entrance, we had no idea of the what was there. One hundred, eleven acres, bordered by scenic water views. Within those acres we found playgrounds, mini golf, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, a dog park, butterfly garden, swimming complex, marina, boat launching ramps, picnic areas, walking paths, benches, and restrooms, There are probably more things that I haven’t included.
Each of the areas parking lots with handicapped spaces. We drove as far as we could go and parked near the marina. This turned out to be a great location as we were able to take a walk on the paved path, looking at the boats in the marina, walking past kids fishing and then continuing on along the water. When my husband, who is still using a walker, tired, there were plenty of benches available for him to stop and rest. We walked far enough to be able to see the Jones Beach Theater in the distance. Since our parking location was near the swim complex, we found multi-stall restrooms, with a large, handicapped-stall and baby-changing station.
We spent much of our time here commenting on how beautiful the park is, and how sorry we were that we didn’t know about it before. If you want a beautiful, serene outdoor venue, this could be it. Now that we know about it, we will add it to the list of places we love.
As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to visit a venue’s website, www.nassaucountyny.gov/2805/wantaghpark, to “know before you go.
