In my quest for outdoor, water view dining , I have yet another venue to offer. I found it listed as the “Key West Beachfront Beer Garden,” on Google. When I went to the website, it is listed as the “Sunset Restaurant at Islip Town Beach.” No matter what it is called, if you are looking for an easily accessible, very casual venue with good food, pleasant service and a great view of the Great South Bay and the Fire Island Lighthouse, this is it!

It is literally located on the beach. Since it is a town beach, we had to stop by the security booth as we drove in.  When we said we wanted to go to the restaurant, he pointed to where it was and told us to have a good dinner.  I am not sure if there is a charge at other times. We were there about 7:30 on a weeknight – a time that was not very busy. We found five, handicapped (van)- accessible parking spaces, two of which are close to the ramp for the restaurant, as well as the ramp going to the large gazebo on the beach.

This ia a very casual, beach place. The dining area is on a wooden deck. The tables, booths and high-top tables are an eclectic mix. There is adequate space to navigate. The restaurant shares space with showers for beach-goers, a playground behind the restaurant, multi-stall restrooms with a large, handicapped stall, and a baby-changing station. We took space at one of the shared, high tables in order to have a view of the Great South Bay and Fire Island. Being a very clear day, we had a great view!  Not all of the tables or booths have this view, but there are other options.  You can order at the window and take your food over to one of the picnic tables under the large gazebo and be even closer to the water, of, if you bring your own blanket or chairs, you can take you food to the beach, just a few steps away.

Our server was very pleasant and our dinners quite good. Live music was a nice touch!  “No rush, no pressure,” seems to be the vibe here. The Key West title seems to be a perfect fit. We had a very relaxed, enjoyable dinner.

As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to check a venue’s website, www.sunsetislip@wixsite.com, to “know before you go.”
