The Woodland Playground at Sands Point Preserve is a delight. We didn’t know about this gem when we went to the Preserve, intending to tour Hempstead House and Faialise. Having recently opened, it may still be a secret, but on the Saturday we visited, it was not very crowded.
Parking is in the main parking area. Although not too far away, if you have someone with walking issues, it might be best to drop him/her off near the Playground, where there are some picnic tables and benches. Or they can enter the playground and have a seat on one of the benches within.
This area is fully fenced, with a rather secure lock that we could not open. It really isn’t difficult, we just didn’t know how to do it. Woodchips are underfoot, along with grass. We found kids engaged with the ” state-of-the-art equipment! This includes a “…cedar castle with towers, turrets, tunnels, a spiral slide, and climbing walls.” There is also a a “75′ zip line, swing set, four-seat rocker, spinners, tether ball, and a huge geodesic dome climber. Children of all ages and different abilities can enjoy creative physical play in a range of modalities…” (website) There are benches throughout for those that need a rest and are allowed to take one!
Just outisde the Playground are several picnic tables, where someone seemed to be having a party.
The only downside to all of this, may be that if one needs a restroom, he/she must walk to the Visitor Center – a bit of a walk (on concrete sidewalk). One can also get drinks and/or snacks.
This is a great new space for the kids. I can’t wait to bring my granddaughter for a visit.
Take note that there is a charge for parking at Sands Point Preserve. Check it out . You may feel it is well worth the price.
As always, we at Destination Accessible advise you to check a venue’s website, www.sandspointpreserveconservancyny.org, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
