Looking for a beautiful, free, tranquil, place to visit on a Saturday or Sunday? Take a drive to Purchase, New York, to visit the PepsiCo (Donald M. Kendall) Sculpture Gardens. The 164 acres, including PepsiCo’s Headquarters building, eleven different gardens and 46 sculptures are set around a lake. One can follow the macadam around the property, or wander the lightly graveled paths (which have some steps in several locations) for a more intimate experience. No matter which way you go, with or without the self-guided audio tour that is available (with an app on your phone), it is a wonderful experience. “Donald Kendall, a former CEO of PepsiCo, imagined the gardens. Started in 1965, it consists of works by major twentieth century artists. The sculptures and gardens exist in harmony.” (website)
We parked in the Visitor Center lot, which has five handicapped (van)- accessible spaces, close to the visitor building. Both men’s and women’s multi-stall, handicapped-accessible restrooms (no baby-changing facilities) are located here. There is a bench here as well.
We got a map and began our journey on the gravel path. The light gravel is fairly easy to traverse, as there is pavement under it. Several people with baby carriages seemed to have no difficulty pushing them. As we strolled along enjoying the art, we came upon several locations that required steps to continue. One can sidestep this by staying on the main blacktop path. This route still enables you to enjoy the art, just not quite as close up. We found one small picnic area with several tables and benches. Unfortunately, benches for resting, are sparse.
This is a beautiful place that is well worth a drive, or a stop if you are in the area and have some time. Take note that the gardens are open on Saturdays and Sundays, from March 30{SUP()}th{SUP} – October 31{SUP()}st{SUP}.
As always, we at Destination:Accessible, advise you to check a venue’s website, http://www.pepsico.com, when planning a visit , to “know before you go.”
