Popei’s Clam Bar, Coram, is one of four locations. The sign out front and the building itself reminds me of places I have visited in New England. The large, paved parking lot has two, van-accessible spaces.
The last time I was here it was winter, and pre-Covid, so I never even thought about their outdoor patio. Today was different. It was a summer day, when many people still do not want to dine indoors. Although my friend and I were going to be on the patio, I made my way up the slight concrete incline to the double-door entry. There is an entry area with benches and another set of double-doors to the welcome area.
There is a full-height bar to the left, which is also the way to the patio. The main dining room is ahead and to the left. Booths are on either side of the flat-carpeted dining area. Tables and chairs are well-spaced in the nautical-themed room, which is complete with several large fish hanging from the ceiling.
Going past the bar leads to the patio. Out here you will find the Tiki Bar, and a variety of tables and chairs. There is heated table seating in colder weather, not something we wanted on this very hot day. As I said earlier, one can access the patio without going inside. There is a ramp from the parking lot that will get one to the patio. My wheelchair using companion found it easier to go inside, past the bar, to get there.
The website says that there is a “…family atmosphere during the day…and a great place to party at night.” There are live music nights. We would say that Popei’s has a casual, relaxed atmosphere. The website says that “…the staff is friendly and fun.” We certainly agree about our server. She was friendly, fun and efficient as well. She made us feel as though we had known her for years! Popei’s is known for good food at reasonable prices. We have been told that their “specials,” are really special and that they have great seafood and pasta combos. We can only say that our soup, salads and tacos were not only delicious, but we had enough left over for another meal at home. What a treat! We had a wonderful, relaxed lunch in a fun setting. We will have to check it out one evening, to see how that is!
Multi-stall restrooms, have an accessible stall. Unfortunately, the door to the accessible stall opens in, rather than out, making it quite difficult, or nearly impossible, to get a wheelchair in.There are no baby-changing facilities.
As always, we at Destination:Accessible, advise you to visit a venue’s website, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
