After having lunch at the Library Cafe, I was anxious to see what the Farmingdale Library looks like now. What a difference!  From a small corner building, the new library is a large, open-floor plan struture with a beautiful atrium, lots of seating and a multitude of activities

I was impressed by the size of the parking lot.  Ten handicapped-spaces are located near the entrance ramps.  There never seems to be enough parking at my home library!

The main entrance is undergoing some repairs so I had to enter through another entrance.  Both entrances have steps and ramps, along with automatic doors, which make life a bit easier.

The library has two floors, the main level and lower level where the meeting rooms are located. The building does not have a dedicated theater.  All programs take place in one or more of the many “conference rooms.”

As I made my way to the lower level I wa again impressed to see the benches in this large lobby-like area.

Multi-stall, handicapped-accessible restrooms (with baby-changing stations) can be found on both levels.  The restrooms on the lower level require steps or a ramp to reach them.

Snack machines and a few tables are located in the upper level of the atrium.

People have been saying for some time that libraries are becoming obsolete becausse of computers.  As I look at all the people in the Farmingdale Library I am seeing that the dismal prrediction is not coming true.  Just looking at Farmingdale’s Newsletter gives us a glimpse of how libraries are reinventing themselves, and I, for one, am glad.

As always, we at Destination Accessible advise you to visit a venue’s website, www.farmingdalelibrary.org, when planning a visit to “know before you go.”
