A beautiful Saturday morning in Berkeley found us at Saul’s Restaurant & Deli. It is located in what is known as the “Gourmet Ghetto” on Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley. This area is made up of few blocks of good eating establishments.

Parking has to be found on the street (metered). The area leading to the street-level, double-door entry is concrete.

As we opened the door the aroma of classic Jewish deli greeted us.  If you know what this aroma is, you know what I mean! The wonderful fragrance brings back good memories for many of us. Saul’s is locally owned and in operation since 986.

Saul’s is “…an authentic, vibrant, relevant delicatessen that…bridges the links between the Old Country and the New World…it provides a cultural and culinary home to those looking for familiar traditional foods.” (website)  Everything we had was delicious!  Our server was friendly and efficient – and especially nice to the toddler in our group.

Getting to our table was not bad, even with a carriage.  Although not spacious, there is adequate room to maneuver.  A combination of booths, tables and chairs in an upbeat setting give Saul’s a fun vibe.  Getting to the restrooms is easy, just down the corridor to the back of the dining room. We found one men’s and one women’s, single-occupancy, handicapped-accessible restroom with baby-changing sstation.  There is also one unisex restroom which is rather small.

I had noticed a piano as we walked in.  Upon checking, I found out that they have Klezmer Mondays, live piano music Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays, as well as a variety of special events.  Check the website for further information.

By the way, they make their own pickles and pastrami. Yummm…….!

As always, we at Destination Accessible advise you to check a venue’s website, www.saulsdeli.com, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
