Parking can be found on street, under the de Young Museum *(garage), or at Ocean Beach Parking (requiring a shuttle bus). Most of the park is handicapped-accessible (check individual venue listings for more information). There are many benches to be found. The area around the Main Concourse is paved and flat. We have not checked out all of the park as yet.

After our visit to the Japanese Tea Garden decided to take a walk. We made our way to the Main Concourse of this huge park (20% larger than Central Park). This area, between the California Academy of Sciences and the de Young Museum is a beautiful space. The main area was originally excavated for the California Midwinter Exposition of 1894. Its main focal point is its beautiful bandshell, home of many events each year. There are ramps as well as steps, leading to the main area. Of course, benches abound!
A beautiful fountain, lush trees and plantings, and many benches invite sitting and enjoying the space. As we relaxed I took the opportunity to “Google” Golden Gate Park, and discovered that we could spend several weeks trying to do everything this park has to offer. From museums, to gardens, to lakes (10 of them), to waterfalls (2 of them), to a carousel, and even tours. We will return, probably many times!
We found several food vendors and enjoyed a tasty snack. We suspect thate are more vendors throughout the park but were not able to check out the entire 1,000 acres this time.
Multi-stall restrooms have large, handicapped-accessible stalls. We did not see any baby-changing stations.
Since we were there on a weekday we found street parking on one of the streets that wind through the park. We suspect that weekends are a different story. Parking is also available under the de Young Museum or at Ocean Beach parking. Shuttle busses are available to get you back from the Ocean Beach area.
This is a wonderful place to visit even if you are not headed to one of the museums or gardens. Make sure to check the website to see the great variety of activities and events available in this incredible place.
As always, we at Destination Accessible advise you to check a venue’s website, www.sfrec,park.org-open-spaces, or www.golden-gate-park.com, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
