A visit to Harbor Front Park is always pleasurable. Just outside of the hustle and bustle of Port Jeff Village, it’s a great place to sit on one of the many benches and enjoy the view of the harbor. We always enjoy our visits here. This is an easy place to keep a good distance between yourself and others. One can get here easily on the street, or by making your way through Danford’s outside areas. See our previous “” for a complete review.
Our previous from September, 2019
Just a few blocks from the heart of town and the Port Jeff Ferry Terminal is Harbor Front Park and Village Center. It is…”a passive park that offers a pastoral setting for relaxing, walking and picnics.” (website) We had not been here in several years and never during beautiful weather. This last Saturday in September was a perfect day to revisit. This easy to navigate area has concrete or fine gravel for walking, lots of benches facing the harbor, a nautical themed play area for kids, two small beach areas (one accessible by concrete ramp almost to the water), the other requiring three steps down, and a great view of the harbor. There is also a long, easily walkable, wooden pier, but alas, no benches on the pier. We were delighted to take a leisurely walk around the area, and then sit on one of the benches and take in the view on this cloudless day!
The Village Center is located here. It is in a former ship-building location and is the center for recreational activities for residents and non-residents alike. There are activities for everyone from children to seniors. A rink located outside the building is used for ice skating in winter and roller skating in spring. A second floor gallery with rotating exhibits is accessible by elevator or stairs. There are many events in Port Jefferson during the year. Check them out!
Multi-stall, handicapped accessible restrooms, with baby-changing stations are on the first floor. The exit to the rink is also on this floor
A metered parking area is located beyond the Village Center. Two designated handicapped spaces are just across from the main entrance with a paved walkway to the two sets of street level, double doors. If you park closer to the Ferry Terminal and center of town, it is a fairly easy walk to the park by going behind Danfords and walking along the water. You will find benches along this route.
As always, we at Destination Accessible advise you to check a venue’s website, http://www.portjeff.com, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
