Fond memories of our trip to New Orleans brought us to the Landmark on Main Street Theater in Port Washington for a Zydeco concert. Zydeco “blends blues, rhythm and blues and music indigenous to the Louisiana Creoles and the Native people of Louisiana.” says Wikipedia. It is a fun sound and one that makes you want to move.
The historic landmark building, once the Main Street School, is now home to senior housing, community rooms, and a 425-seat theater.
A paved parking lot with several handicapped spaces is just outside the street level, double door main entrance. Although all of the handicapped spaces were taken when we arrived, a kind security guard allowed us to park in one of the reserved spaces.
Once inside the main entrance we found six steps up to the theater level. If needed, a lift is available for use. Just ask one of the ushers for help.
The theater itself is wheelchair accessible. There are no steps. A wide incline gets you to all seats. There are areas set aside for wheelchair seating as well.
Balcony seating is available, but one must climb the stairs to get there.
There are two sets of restrooms. On the theater entrance level we found a multi-stall, but not handicapped accessible, restroom. A single occupancy, handicapped accessible restroom requires walking up five steps or using the available lift.
Once we were comfortably seated we were treated to two hours of authentic Cajun sounds with lots of bead throwing (if you’ve been to New Orleans you know what I mean), from “Terrance Simien and The Zydeco Experience.” What a fun performance!
Food is not available at this venue, but many good eating establishments can be found close by in Port Washington (check the Landmark’s website for some suggestions).
As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to check a venue’s website, www.landmarkonmainstreet.org, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
