On Memorial Day we headed to Provincetown. We had little traffic since most of the cars were headed off the Cape.
Parking is tough in this town. We parked in a Municipal lot a few steep streets from the heart of town. If mobility is a problem it is probably best to drop your passenger off by one of the benches or coffee shops on Commercial Street and go park.
Commercial Street is the narrow, main thoroughfare. It is uneven (to say the least). There is sidewalk either on one side or the other of this street. Sidewalks are mostly brick with cutouts for wheelchair accessibility. We found many people strolling casually in the street, checking out the shops and stopping for snacks. The drivers seem to accommodate the throngs of people, waiting patiently and not honking. Many side streets go down to the water. Most establishments have at least one step to get inside.
Walking is not very easy, but if you can manage it Provincetown is a lively, happening place with lots of shops, interesting galleries and many choices for food.
We took a Provincetown Trolley Tour (www.provincetowntrolley.com) to get acquainted with the town. It was a good overview of the town and surrounding area giving a sense of its history and geography. Unfortunately, none of the trolleys are handicapped accessible. We were told that they make every effort to get people on-board who can exit their wheelchairs.
