As the rain continued on the Cape, we headed to the Sandwich Glass Museum.
Three handicapped parking spaces can be found in the paved parking lot just outside the entrance.
A ramp leads to double glass doors.
Once inside this one story building, we found 14 easy to navigate galleries displaying, in chronological order, the various types of glassware produced in Sandwich, Massachusetts from 1835 until the Company’s closing on January 1, 1888. (brochure)
We arrived just in time to view the “once an hour” glassblowing demonstration. We were even able to get good seats. The gentleman doing the demo gave a running commentary with lots of interesting information while forming his work of art.
A small theater presented an interesting and informative 25 minute video entitled, “Sandwich: The First Hundred Years.”
The museum has a gallery showcasing local glass artists.
Of course, there is a small gift area with some lovely reproductions.
The museum’s mix of history and art was an interesting way to spend some time on a rainy day.
As always, we at Destination Accessible advise you to check a venue’s website, www.sandwichglassmuseum.org, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
