A concert by Jake Shimabukuro, a “ukelele virtuoso,” brought us to The Patchogue Theater of the Performing Arts. We had never heard of him, but were drawn to the description of his “fast and complex finger work.” (Wikipedia) Wow! He did not disappoint.
The theater is located on Main Street, in the heart of Patchogue. Parking can be found in a public lot directly behind the building, on the street (if you are lucky), or in a lot behind the businesses directly across Main Street (See description for further details).
Everyone must enter the building through the double door, street level main entrance. We found out that you can exit the building at street level directly into the parking lot behind the theater. The carpeted lobby is quite spacious, with a large bar serving drinks and snacks.
Although there is balcony seating, there is no elevator to that level. A full flight of carpeted stairs are the only way up. Handicapped seating is available in two sections at the rear of the orchestra.
As we walked through the lobby and into the theater to take our seats we alwways take note of the beauty of this venue. It reminded us of the glorious movie theaters we had frequented in our youth. This venue has been restored. It originally opened in 1923, playing host to vaudeville, burlesque, and silent films. The cost was 40 cents for adults and half price for kids. The building closed down in 1987, but was restored to its former grandeur in 1997. The Patchogue Theater operates as a non-profit organization. All of its friendly, helpful staff are volunteers.
It is Suffolk County’s largest theater with 944 orchestra and 222 balcony seats plus two sections for disabled seating. With 140 performances, over 130,000 people came through its doors last year. Their mission is to present “…a broad spectrum of performing arts for the benefit of a wide-ranging audience at affordable prices.” (website) What a wonderful new life!
Getting to our seats was easy, with wide aisles and a gentle incline. Lighting along both sides is helpful. The seats are comfortable.
Multi-stall, handicapped-accessible restrooms are at the rear of the lobby, close to the orchestra seating .
As always, we at Destination Accessible advise you to check a venue’s website, www.patchoguetheater.com, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
