Another place we had not visited since our children were small is the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum and Education Center. It is housed in a one story building on Main Street (Route 25A).
Although there is no on-site parking, one can usually find street parking on a weekday. If not, there is a municipal parking lot a short distance away. You can drop someone off in front of the building where there is a brick courtyard. The brick extends up a slight incline to the double door main entrance.
Once inside it is easy to navigate this venue. An audio tour is available, as well as a video one can sit and watch, about whaling. There is much information to be had in this relatively small space. There are 6,000 artifacts that document the whaling and general maritime history of both Cold Spring Harbor and Long Island in general. Be sure to check out the scrimshaw!
The museum hosts rotating exhibits as well as its permanent collection. A fascinating exhibit entitled “Waves & Watercolors” is there until September. 2014. Along with information about the artists and their works the museum offers “Art Speak.” There are simple questions for kids to ponder, and ideas for parents to discuss.
A multi-stall, handicapped accessible bathroom is on the main floor.
This venue is part of the “Senior Days” activities (see “http://www.cshwhalingmuseum.org/just-for-seniors.html” for details)
As always, we at Destination Accessible advise you to check a venue’s website, www.cshwhalingmuseum.org, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
