A nice summer evening brought us to the Gateway Playhouse for a performance of “Smokey Joe’s Cafe.” The Gateway, celebrating its 65th birthday, is the oldest professional theater on Long Island.

Gateway is located in a country setting in Bellport.  We drove up to find a red barn-like structure that would fit anywhere in New England.

Handicapped parking is located in a dedicated lot just across from the main entrance.  The lot is flat, but not paved, making it somewhat rough.  We noticed some patrons being dropped off in front of the entrance, with the driver proceeding to the parking lot.

Because it was a lovely evening we found many people relaxing at the tables and chairs located just outside the entrance.  A wooden ramp led us to the open doors that took us directly into the lobby, where we also found seating. Beverages and snacks are sold at the bar in the lobby.

Spacious restrooms with a large handicapped accessible stall are located in the lobby.

A slight incline got us into the theater itself.  Reminiscent of a barn with exposed wooden beams, the theater seems larger than its 500-seat capacity.  The aisles are wide.  Wheelchairs can easily be accommodated in the rear.

Although we had the farthest seats on the left in our row, viewing was still good.  The same can probably be said about all seats.

We found this venue to be an easy and enjoyable summer experience, making us feel like we were on vacation yet not far from home. The performance was wonderful!

As always, we at Destination Accessible advise you to check a venue’s website, http://www.thegateway.org">www.thegateway.org, when planning a visit to “know before you go.”
