A production of “Man of La Mancha” brought us to the Engeman Theater in Northport. We have been here before and have always been impressed by the productions. It is nice to see professional theater without the hassle of going into Manhattan. This production is yet another of their successes. Wonderful performers, great voices, choreography, and sets combine to make for a great time. We were happy we made the effort to see it.
Complimentary valet parking is avaiable, or you can park on the street or in a nearby municipal lot. We were lucky to get a spot close-by, on the street. The theater is entered through street level double doors. Once inside, the box office is to your left and a lovely bar/lounge area is to the right. The lobby is carpeted, and has a variety of seating.
This beautiful venue was opened in 1932 and underwent changes and closings. It was bought by a Huntington couple in 2006 and transformed into the jewel it is today. The name honors the owner’s brother, Chief Warrant Officer Four John William Engeman.
Entering the theater itself bring you to Row F. From here forward, no steps are required. The aisles are wide and there is a handrail on the wall. If you are going farther up, be prepared for steps. If you have any questions or issues, don’t hesitate to call the box office. We had a minor problem and when we called, they could not have been any nicer. They will do anything they can to help you out.
If needed, wheelchair seating is available. The entire Row F has seating that can be removed to make room for wheelchairs. I have never seen this anywhere else! Balcony seating requires a flight of steps.
Multi-stall restrooms are located on either side of the lobby. A single occupancy handicapped accessible restroom is also on the main floor.
Productions, for both adults and children are offered throughout the year.
As always, we at Destination Accessible advise you to check a venue’s website, www.engemantheater.com when planning a visit to “know before you go.”
