We were lucky enough to visit the Philadelphia Flower Show. This “one-of-a-kind event known the world over for its exquisite and immersive floral exhibits, world class plant competitions, family friendly activities, educational offerings, and shopping…” is in its 195th year! (website)
Located in the Pennsylvania Convention Center, this event is easily accessible. From the street-level entrances, to the elevators to the show floor, to all of the restrooms (with accessible stalls and sinks), it is quite easy to get around. Of course, one has to take into consideration the crowds that are there (especially mid-day). Guests who need accessibility equipment while at the show can reserve a mobility rental online, ahead of their visit, to ensure one is available when they arrive. There is a “mobility stand” outside the main exhibit entrance where one can get assistance and have their questions answered. For more information about these services, call (215) 988-8800. Flower Show maps, as well as signage throughout, show ADA ramps and restroom locations. Although I do not know the square footage of the Show, I do know that it is in a very large space!
The only complaint we have is the lack of seating within the venue. There are not nearly enough chairs and/or benches to accommodate even a small fraction of the people visiting. Some chairs and benches are located in a center area within the Hamilton Horticourt, and a few around the perimeter of the show.
The Show itself is amazing. “This year’s theme “United by Flowers,” is a celebration of the community that blooms each Spring.” (website) It is visually stunning! As we entered through the main entrance, we were overwhelmed by the huge, floral design. At least two stories high, we were instantly drawn to it. The colors and setting are fantastic. A promenade (if you wish to follow it) winds its way through many different full-size, displays. There are areas of fabulous Bonsai, competitive arrangements of differing sizes, miniatures, and various other things.
Throughout the day there are demonstrations and other events.
There is food at various locations, but few places to sit and enjoy it.
The Marketplace has a large variety of things to purchase, both plant related and otherwise.
There is even a kids’ area!
If you love flowers, The Philadelphia Flower Show is truly a “must see.”
As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to visit a venue’s website, www.phyonline.org/the-flower-show, when planning a visit, to “know before you go,”
