Description

The Museum of Modern Art is located in midtown Manhattan. The entrance is street-level. Once you enter the building there are six steps or a ramp to get to the main level. Everything in the building is handicapped accessible, including the sculpture garden.

Escalators and large elevators get you to each of the museums six floors. Galleries are spacious, viewing is easy. There are benches in many galleries as well as benches near the escalators on each floor.

Multi-stall, handicapped accessible bathrooms are located on every floor next to a water fountain.  Access is easy, but the doors are heavy. All gender restrooms are located on floors 1,3W,t and T1.

MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) is a New York Institution. October, 2019 was the reopening of its latest renovation. This renovation has added 47,000 square feet the the museum, which was obvious as I made my way through the exhibits. Besides the additional space, the art works seemed to be displayed differently, in more “groups.”  Galleries are spacious, with benches in many of them. Benches are located in the “lobbies” of each floor, near the elevators. There is considerable space to move around anywhere. This new space seemed to me to allow me to “wander around,”rather than having to follow a path. Interactive spaces have been integrated on several floors for new kinds of programming.

Located in mid-town Manhattan, (11 West 53rd Street), there is no parking garage. If driving one needs to find a close-by garage. If one drops a passenger off in front, just go inside and you will find seats near the elevator to the Museum Shop. A really nice touch are the street-level galleries that are free and open to all.

Accessibility is easy here, elevators go to every floor, accessible restrooms are located on every floor and all gender restrooms are located on Floors 1,3W, 5 and Ti. Not only is accessibility easy, the museum website does a great job of telling us about it. Everything you need to know about accessibility is easy to find. Kudos to them for a job well done!

Besides the beautiful art inside, there is a sculpture garden outside.

There are several eating venues at MoMA, including the Terrace Cafe on the fifth floor. All of them are accessible.

No visit to a museum is complete without a visit to the Museum Store. MoMA has expanded the size of the store and located it on the lower level. It can be accessed by elevator.

If you are interested in modern art, a visit to MoMA is a must!

As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to visit a venue’s website, www.moma.org, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
