Serenity Gardens, located on the grounds of Brookwood Hall Park in East Islip, is a sensory park that is, “designed to be enjoyed by residents of all abilities.” It is a sensory park that has four distinct quadrants tailored to the needs of individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease or Dementia, those on the autism spectrum, seniors and veterans, and individuals who are visually or hearing impaired.”(Town of Islip). The one acre park provides a soothing environment for all.

The enclosed, fully-accessible park is divided into zones. There is a braille garden, musical instrument stations and sensory pathways that have a ix of mulch, gravel, and tactile pads. There are adult-friendly swings, wind chimes and a walking labyrinth. A central gazebo, koi pond and waterfall are included to promote relaxation.  There is also a designated space with seating chess and bocce courts.

Wide walking paths surround the park and divide it into four areas that are anchored by the gazebo at the center.

There is definitely a calm feeling here. As we walked around we saw people taking advantage of the areas.  A family was interacting with the wind chimes, several people were using the adult swings, one young adult was mesmerized by the koi pond and waterfall, and several people were relaxing on some of the benches.

The park is really lovely.

If you are looking for slides, swings and climbing structures, this is not the place for you.  There is an area with all of that on the other side of the parking lot. There is also a path that you can take that will get you to the river, where you can sit and relax as well.

We would like to comment on the restrooms, which are located in a self-contained building.  Unfortunately, on this Sunday afternoon at 1:30 pm, none of the restrooms were open.  When I called later to ask about when the restrooms are supposed to be open, I was told that, “perhaps they were not completed yet.”  We will let you know about the restrooms the next time we visit.

Parking is easy in several lots. There are eight accessible spaces in the closest lot, and others in the other parking lot. (There are signs to direct you)

All in all, this appears to be a wonderful addition to Long Island.
