Our first visit to Shelter Island brought us to Mashomack Preserve, which is cared for by The Nature Conservancy is 2,350 acres of interlacing tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, and various habitats, combine to make this the “Jewel of the Peconic,”
We parked in a gravel parking area and made our way to the Visitor Center, Along the way we found a paved area with two accessible parking spaces.
According to it’s website, the Visitor Center has universal access for all. Although it was supposed to be open, it was not, so we could not check it out,
We walked past a lovely picnic area, with accessible picnic tables, and made our way to the “Boardwalk, at the beginning of the trails. This is a fully ADA compliant walk, which is in very good shape. The entire Preserve is very well maintained. There is some up and down along the way, but nothing too much for anyone .
After taking in the nature along our way, we made our way back to the entrance and decided to try the Joan Coles Trail. This approximately one mile trail is considered “barrier-free” and “amendable to wheelchairs and strollers,” Although it is “barrier-free” we thought that parts of it might be a bit challenging.
Accessible restrooms can be accessed from the outside of the Visitor Center.
It is probably best to come prepared with long pants, sneakers and bug spray. If you forget the spray we notice that there was bug spray left for visitors outside the entrance to the Center.
We did not venture much farther, just a bit on the Red Trail. Some of the folks we spoke with coming off the Red Trail said that it was quite nice.
As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to visit a venue’s website, www.nature.org/mashomack, when planning a visit, to learn more.
