The Harrison, a neighborhood restaurant in a landmark building, is “vibrant American Tavern with red leather booths and warm wood finishes.  It offers a diverse menu of American classics prepared from scratch.” (Website).

We had never heard of The Harrison, and found it quite by accident, as we were navigating to someplace else. It looked interesting, and so we decided to return and give it a try.

We were certainly not disappointed by the decor, food or service. Everything was exceptional, except getting into the restaurant. Because there is a high step up to the single door entrance, my friend could not enter that way. There was no indication of where an accessible entrance might be, so I entered and asked the first person I saw about getting in.  She proceeded to walk through what appears to be the lobby area of another building, through two doors and on to a final door leading to the outside. This door is labeled as accessible, but one has to know to go to the right end of the building  turn left and find the door.  She then unlocked that street-level door, allowing my friend to enter. Take note that several of the doorways have small “lips” to navigate as well. Certainly not the easiest thing to do to get into a venue, especially for someone with a mobility limitation.

Once we made it inside, everything was great! As mentioned previously, the decor is classic American Tavern, warm and welcoming. Floors are wood and flat carpet. Linen napkins on the tables add a wonderful touch. There is ample space throughout for easy navigation and private conversation. The main dining room has lovely booths, banquettes and tables with armless chairs. There is a lounge area with full-height bar, and large TV screens.

There is also a lovely party room that feels “terrace like” with large windows that look out on the outdoor patio.

The food was delicious.  The freshly baked bread on the table was amazing! That and a salad would make a great meal for me! Our choices of Chicken Paillaird and their Classic Burger, were incredibly good.

Our server could not have been nicer.

The restaurant was not crowded for a late lunch and we were able to relax and enjoy our food and conversation in a relaxed atmosphere. So relaxed that it was difficult to leave!

There are four single-occupancy restrooms, two of which are quite large and accessible. There are no baby-changing facilities. The only problem in the restrooms is that the mirror is too high for someone in a wheelchair.

I almost forgot to mention the parking. There is a paved, parking lot directly across the street, which has some spaces dedicated to The Harrison. There are also two accessible spaces in the lot.

Although we loved the restaurant, entering and exiting could be a definite challenge for some. If you or someone in your party has a mobility challenge and needs to use the accessible entrance, it would be best to make sure there is someone available to go inside and get the help needed.

As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to visit a venue’s website, www.theharrisonfp.com, to learn more.
