Having been to Popei’s in Coram, I was happy to find one in Deer Park. After some shopping at “The Arches, it seemed like a good place for a late lunch.
Before going any further, I have to tell you that, although there are three accessible parking spaces in the paved parking lot, the entrances are wheelchair accessible and there is plenty of room to navigate throughout, the restrooms are not accessible. The stalls are narrow and do not have handrails. The sinks are not accessible either.
If you can manage with the above mentioned features of the restroom, Popei’s is a great place for lunch or dinner. The menu is extensive. Although primarily a fish restaurant, we found a good number of choices for “Land Lovers.”
There are two, single door entrances, one leading to the large bar, lounge area. There is a full-height bar, high-top tables and some booths. The other door leads directly to the large, quieter, dining room. Here you will find tables, armless chairs, and banquettes. You can easily get from one area to the other. There is ample space throughout, making navigation easy.
We chose to sit in the quieter dining room and were shown to a banquette. Although the space is large it seems cozy and welcoming.
The extensive menu took us awhile to get through. Our server couldn’t have been nicer about not rushing us. While we were deciding, he brought us a complimentary basket of delicious garlic bread – too good!
Our final choices – Blackened Seared Tuna with Homemade Salsa, and Fish and Chips were both incredible. Both items were cooked to perfection, not to mention that the Waffle Fries were perfect as well. I have to mention that the Fish and Chips were enough for two meals, making my better half happy the next day!
As was stated earlier, it is unfortunate that the restrooms are not accessible. If you can manage without that, we recommend Popei’s, Deer Park.
As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to visit a venue’s website, www.popeis.com, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
