Games for Older Adults by Roberta Rosenberg
Over 50 million people in the US are over the age of 65. No matter how old we get, most of us keep our childhood love of fun and games. Although we may not be as agile as we once were, and our memories may not be as good as they once were, we can still enjoy playing games and reap the benefits.
Some of those benefits include, improving mental health, keeping the brain active, boosting memory and concentration, relieving stress, encouraging socialization, improving mood and wellbeing, preventing boredom. Games are good for our overall health.
Even though some of us may have physical or cognitive challenges, most games can be modified to suit the person playing. The variety of games available is constantly growing, which means that we have many choices .
The Hasbro Company (Ageless Innovation) has developed senior friendly versions of popular games like Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit and The Game of Life. They have made gameplay easier and more appealing for older players. Check out Trivial Pursuit Generations, and Scrabble Bingo 3-in-1 Edition. They have made gameplay easier and more appealing for older players.
You can also find large print puzzles and word searches, large print playing cards, Super Big Boggle, Giano Uno, Large Number Rummikube, as well as other games, for those with vision limitations.
Besides the aforementioned games, my research has led me to suggest some of the following possibilities:
Scrabble Solo, Funny Trivia for Seniors, Remember When - Picture Puzzles, Qwirkle, Ticket-to-ride, Dixit.
Enjoy! Everyone likes to play good, old-fashioned games!
