The Boulton Center for the Performing Arts, in Bay Shore, is called, ‘the most intimate theater on Long Island.”  Although I am not sure this is the case, it surely is a theater that makes you feel a part of the performance.

Having not been here in some time, we finally made it to a performance by “Jay & The Americans. It was nostalgia for us and so we didn’t really expect too much from it.  Boy, we were wrong. It was spectacular!

Now on to my real reason for writing this – to tell you about the accessibility of the theater.  Originally known as the Regent Movie Theater, located in downtown Bay Shore, it opened in 1929. The Boulton Family gave it to the Great South Bay YMCA in 1997, and the Boulton Family repurchased it in 2023.

Parking can be found on the street (pay, metered parking), or in the large lot on the next block. One can easily walk between the buildings to access the lot.

Two sets of street-level, double doors, get you to the lobby, where we found a nice snack bar.  From here there is a long hallway, with a slight incline, to the theater itself. The theater has 260 seats in an intimate setting, with unbelievable views from every seat. Seating is a bit tight.

Once inside the theater itself you will notice that there is only one row that does not require a step up or down to get to one’s seat. Take note that there are no handrails in the aisles to assist with getting up and down.

Multi-stall, restrooms have a large, accessible stall and accessible sink.  There is also a baby-changing station.

This is a lovely venue in which we enjoyed a fabulous performance.

It is unfortunate that nowhere on its  website does the Boulton Center saw anything at all about its accessibility.

As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to visit a venue’s website, www.boultoncenter.org, to “know more about a venue.”
