An unexpected opportunity to tour Citi Field allowed us to see how accessible this venue is. From more than 800 accessible seats, to 15 family restrooms, to sensory packs, a sensory nook, quiet areas, and even two, adult changing stations, Citi Field seems to have done a great job of making those with disabilities feel welcome!
Starting with the 350 close by, accessible parking spaces in Parking Lots B & F,, to the 11 elevators that take guests to all levels, I was happy to see and hear that Citi Field has their fans’ needs and has tried to accommodate them as best they can. Based on our tour, I think they have done a good job. We were able to see The Press Box (from which the sports writers watch the game), the Owner’s Suite (which can accommodate quite a crowd), The Press Conference Room ( where new players are introduced and the difficult questions are asked and answered). We even got to a seat in a stadium seat so close to the field that the seats were thickly padded. Note that anyone with an accessibility need can enter through any entrance (including VIP entrances) even if their ticket location doesn’t get VIP entry.
We always say you should visit www.destinationaccessible.org, to “know before you go,” and we certainly want you to do that. It is not often that we find a website that has done a great job of giving the detailed information people with disabilities need in order to have their best experience possible. We can honestly say that you should go to “www:mlb.com/mets/ballpark/disability-access guide to find out about many things important to someone with a mobility limitation. They even have an “accessibility map,” so that you can see the information that is provided in written form. !
One of the things we did not find online is the fact that, in almost every section, the last row does not require any steps to get to your seat. That means, if you, or someone you are with, isn’t comfortable doing steps, you can get seats that don’t require you to do any steps. Such a great thing for seniors, unsteady walkers, etc.
One of the sweetest things I found online is what they call “A Social Story,” which tells, in both words and pictures, what to expect (both visually and audibly) when you attend a game. This is a great to introduce a child who has never been exposed to a Major League Baseball game and stadium, to what to expect.
We can tell you that, besides the 15 family restrooms, all of the multi-stall restrooms have two accessible stalls, accessible sinks and a baby-changing station.
