Description

The Fairy Dell Boardwalk is located across the railroad tracks and about two blocks from the gravel, parking area for the Quogue Wildlife Refuge. There are two accessible spaces near the entrance to the Refuge.
The Boardwalk is made of "tree-like" material. It is well-maintained and smooth for a boardwalk.
The walk has three branches, with benches throughout.

Technically, a part of the Quogue Wildlife Refuge, the Fairy Dell Boardwalk is located across the LIRR Railroad tracks and a bit down the road. After parking in the gravel parking area (with two accessible spaces) walk toward the entrance to the Refuge. From the Refuge entrance cross over the railroad tracks and keep walking. As you come to the spot where the road forks, if you look straight ahead you will see a black fence with an open gate. That is the entrance to the Fairy Dell Boardwalk. It’s unfortunate that there isn’t any closer parking because this is a great place for anyone with a mobility challenge.

The 1,500 boardwalk is “…a catwalk through beautiful tidal wetlands of the Quogue Wildlife Refuge.” It traverses through the historic Fairy Dell Tract along the headwaters of Quantuck Creek. Fairy Dell is the local name for the headwaters of Quantuck Creek, which are visible from the Boardwalk platforms.

The Boardwalk is easily accessible, with the boardwalk being constructed of smooth, trex-like material.  There are benches on the main walkway and at the ends of the three “fingers” leading to the headwaters.  Take the time to read the information offered along the way. It is fascinating. If you are there are the right time, you can watch the osprey nest, and other wildlife you may encounter. Even though it was fairly barren in mid-March, it was still tranquil and beautiful. We loved our visit here. We will definitely be back in other seasons to see how it changes.

Restrooms can be found at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge. There are accessible restrooms in the Nature Center Building (multi-stall with a large, accessible stall and baby-changing station) and in a free-standing building next to the wildlife enclosures (also multi-stall, with a large, accessible stall and baby-changing station).

As always, we at Destination Accessible, advise you to visit a venue’s website, www.quoguewildlifecenter.org, when planning a visit, to “know before you go.”
